A centre of Excellence for National Vocational Teacher Training

Short and Long courses offered                                                                                                               The college conducts a number of courses of various levels and durations. The courses are either established as regular courses or tailor-made.  In any case the college is responsible for the design and review of all courses it conducts.  To date the college has one long course - the Vocational Teachers Certificate Course (VICC) run in two modes; In campus and off campus (outreach) modes.

The In campus mode of the course has been in place since the college started. Since the capacity of the college is limited to about 60 Vocational Teachers only per intake while the required number is more than this number, it was necessary to introduce another mode  – the off campus mode in 2002. The attempt has proved to be successful because we have experienced a very good performance, which was equally the same as that of the in campus mode.

Indeed, participants in the off campus mode had the opportunity to work while attending studies. This situation has a very positive inclination to professional development because trainees tend to immediately put into action what they learn in the course. Through running both In campus and off campus modes, the number of qualified Teachers graduating from MVTTC has increased sharply.

MVTTC strategy is to keep on expanding its training services and maintain the quality of her outputs. We have a future plan to conduct tracer studies and register all the qualified Teachers meeting the qualities, not only by considering that they have vocational Teachers certificate, but also adherence to ethical values and norms of the training profession.

In order to create opportunity for continuous professional development for VET Teachers, MVTTC in collaboration with a team of expert has designed an Ordinary Diploma  (ODVET) Programme. This was done after carrying out a survey to all VET stakeholders for the sake of determining knowledge and skills gaps, which needs to be covered by ODVET. The programme is expected to start effectively from May 2006.  MVTTC strategy is to keep on expanding its training services and maintain the quality of her outputs.

Short courses are designed according to demand and they are organized on regular basis. The commonest short courses are: Instructional Methods Course (IMC), Instructional Techniques Course (ITC), Management Functions Course, Competence Based Education and Training course, Computer courses at different levels, Short course design, Course design based on the Labour market information, Special Needs Education course and English short courses. Summary for courses offered at MVTTC and their fees structure is shown below.

Focus for Our Long Course:                                                                                                                      Vocational Teachers certificate course focuses at developing Teachers with Pedagogical and management Competences together with other attributes of a vocational Teacher like fast adaptation of new technology, confidence, creativity and innovativeness.

Pedagogical competences takes up a major part, and it involve our Teacher trainees with the use of different delivery and instructional techniques, preparation and implementation of scheme and training plan, development and use of teaching/learning materials, preparation and use of assessment tools, assessment of trainees’ competences, course design and implementation, knowledge of educational psychology, practicing gender balance and coping with mixed ability trainees. All these aspects shape our Teacher trainees to the level of being entrusted by VET stakeholders to deliver the goods- in this case a high level of vocational instruction.
