Background The Competence Based Education and Training (CBET) system was adopted by the VET Board in 1998. The new training system has implications on how testing and assessment should be carried out. Assessment is continuous and is carried out once a given unit standard has been achieved. This enables immediate FEEDBACK to the trainee and therefore enhance motivation. The traditional way of carrying out a trade test at the end of a training programme therefore does not fit the new approach to training. Tests are carried out more often under a system of continuous assessment.
