Improving Skills Training for Employment Program (ISTEP - 07)is a three years partnership between Shinyanga Vocational Training Centre and two Canadian colleges, the College of New Caledonia (CNC) and College of the Rockies (COTR), both located in British Columbia. The project is designed to support Shinyanga VTC to improve the quality of vocational training, strengthen linkages between employers and training programs, and establish new vocational programming in response to labour market intelligence.
The project is funded by the Global Affairs Canada and is administered by the Colleges and Institutes Canada. The project has been officially launched on April 1st, 2016 and will be actively operational until March 31st, 2019.
Project Description:
The project has several components:
1. Institutional capacity building through professional development of instructors and staff,
2. Curriculum review,
3. Gender equality,
4. Environmental sustainability, and
5. Entrepreneurship.

Themain focus of the project is to assist Shyinyanga VTC to enhance its capacity to deliver demand-driven competency-based vocational training and engage local industry in the process. Both CNC and COTR will assistand guide Shyinyanga VTC to change the approach on training to a hands-on learning approach with students spending more time learning on the job as opposed to time spent on classroom-based training. In addition, CNC and COTR will share best practices on their experience working closely with Canadian extractives industries and will focus on promoting the project to the local industry in Shinyanga region, with the prospect of connecting and engaging in mutual advantageous initiatives.
Our team believes that by connecting Shyinyanga VTC with the local industry, we will be able to initiate mutually beneficial interactions with a positive impact not only on the school and surrounding community, but on the industry as well, building trust, breaking barriers, and contributing significantly to the employability of the students and, potentially, to the prosperity of the community.
Shyinyanga VTC mandate is to become a Centre of Excellence in the region by increasing the attractiveness of vocational education equally to female and male students and enhancing the employability of each student in close collaboration with employers.
